Glucophage contains 1000 mg of metformin. It is an active ingredient to treat diabetes. It also belongs to a group of medicines called bi-guanides.
Glucophage is used to treat patients with type 2 diabetes (also called ‘non-insulin dependent diabetes’) when diet and exercise alone have not been enough to control your blood glucose levels.
Therapeutic properties:
Used as a monotherapy or in combination with other oral antidiabetic agents or insulin products in adults and children suffering from a diabetic disease.
Treatment of diabetic complications in overweight type 2 diabetic adult patients as first-line therapy after diet failure.
Side effects:
Digestive problems for example feeling sick (for example nausea), being sick (for example vomiting), diarrhea, bellyache (also known as abdominal pain) and loss of appetite, changes in taste.
Allergic skin reactions such as redness of the skin (also known as Erythema), itching or an itchy rash (also known as hives).
Lowered blood levels of Vitamin B12.
Severe: Lactic acidosis. Symptoms of lactic acidosis include vomiting, stomach ache (also known as abdominal pain), muscle cramps, a general feeling of not being well with severe tiredness, difficulty in breathing, reduced body temperature and heartbeat. If this happens you must stop taking Glucophage and specifically contact a doctor or the nearest hospital immediately.
Dosage:
Adults usually start with 500 mg or 850 mg Glucophage two or three times a day. The maximum daily dose is especially 3000 mg taken as 3 divided doses. If you have reduced kidney function, you may need a lower dose.
Take Glucophage with or after a meal. This will avoid you having side effects affecting your digestion. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Swallow each tablet with a glass of water.
